How To Choose the Right Domain Name as part of your Internet Marketing Education
Whether you are launching an online business or you have simply decided to add an online counterpart to a brick and mortar business, you’ll find that one of the first things that you need to consider is your domain name.
Your domain name will be the address that your clients type in to find you, and you’ll find that having a good domain name can make all the difference when you are considering drawing in customers and making your business a success. Take a look below for some important tips when it comes to making sure that your domain name is right for you.
The first thing that you have to keep in mind is that the shorter your domain name is the better. A short name that is hard to misspell is ideal. While it might be cheaper, don’t pick up names that have very long “tails.” Stick with the commonly known suffixes, like .com, .net or .org. You’ll find that this will go a long way towards making your domain name more searchable. Similarly, don’t underestimate the amount of type in traffic you might get; a short, easy to remember domain name is essential in this case.
Think about what the name of your company is. When you run it together, does it make an attractive domain name? Be on the lookout for words that are fine apart but break up into silly or embarrassing things if you run them together. You may find that you need to sit down and brainstorm to get a good URL. Take some time to list as many words that go along with your business as possible and try to find a way to match them. Brainstorming gets all the ideas from your mind down onto paper, it’s a great way to start the process going.
Try to use words that are “normal” or that people use all the time. While you might like an odd spelling or have an exotic word in mind, you’ll find that this can often work against you. Take the time to make sure that your domain name isn’t too odd; run it by your friends and family and see if they can spell it right away. Creating a domain name that people can’t spell or when there’s numbers in it can defeat the purpose of having a memorable name.
Perhaps the most important thing that you need to make sure that the name flows together. Remember that an acronym, while it is short, may not be easy to remember, unless the acronym itself spells out a related word. Remember that even a long string of words, as long as they are memorable can make a good domain name, so keep that in mind when you are selecting yours. There are many different options out there waiting for you, so take the time to come up with a domain name that you like and that represents you. Also be sure to run it by others to see what their thoughts are on your new domain name.
